A novel steel-shape memory alloy hybrid damper for energy mitigation

Description:

This invention introduces a novel hybrid cushion damper that leverages the strengths of both steel and shape memory alloy (SMA) for optimized performance in energy dissipation and self-centering. The damper features a unique design where steel and SMA components are combined using specialized bolt configurations. The steel part adopts an oval shape for enhanced energy dissipation, while the SMA part, with its S-shape, contributes to the damper's self-centering ability. The design allows for the adjustment of the SMA part's curves to suit various damper sizes, enhancing both horizontal and vertical behaviors of the damper.

Key Advantages:

  • Superior energy dissipation through the integration of steel and SMA materials.
  • Enhanced self-centering capability due to the unique properties of shape memory alloys.
  • Customizable performance through adjustable SMA curves.
  • Improved structural resilience in both horizontal and vertical behaviors.
  • Reduction in residual displacements of structures after seismic events.

Problems Solved:

  • Insufficient energy dissipation in traditional damping systems.
  • Lack of self-centering capability leading to permanent structural deformations post-earthquake.
  • Inability to customize damper performance for specific structural needs.
  • High residual displacements in moment-resisting frames after seismic activities.

Market Applications:

  • Seismic retrofitting and reinforcement of existing structures.
  • Construction of new buildings requiring advanced damping solutions.
  • Infrastructure projects such as bridges and highways in earthquake-prone areas.
  • Industrial applications where vibration control is critical.
