Smart Mortar

Description:

This technology develops mortar and concrete mixes by incorporating recycled glass as fine aggregate replacement and encapsulated Phase Change Materials (PCMs) as partial cement substitute, aiming to improve energy efficiency, mechanical strength, and thermal insulation in construction materials while reducing environmental impact.

Key Advantages:

  • Enhanced thermal performance through heat storage capacities of PCMs.
  • Improved flowability and density of mortar mixes.
  • Sustainable use of recycled glass reduces waste and natural resource consumption.
  • Maintains mechanical strength comparable to traditional materials.
  • Potential to significantly reduce energy consumption in buildings.

Problems Solved:

  • High energy consumption related to building heating and cooling.
  • Overreliance on traditional cement and aggregates with large carbon footprints.
  • Waste glass disposal challenges by repurposing into construction materials.
  • Poor thermal insulation capabilities of conventional mortar and concrete.

Market Applications:

  • Residential and commercial building construction for sustainable design.
  • Manufacturing of energy-efficient concrete blocks and panels.
  • Green building projects seeking LEED certification or similar standards.
  • Suppliers and retailers such as Quickrete and Home Depot focusing on sustainable products.
